Déjà Vu: Why Does This Happen and What Does it Mean?

Déjà Vu

Haven’t I done this before?

Déjà Vu is an experience that I think almost everyone has had. It’s easy to recognize, but hard to understand.  Basically déjà vu means that you are going about your daily life and a moment that you are in seems familiar to you. Almost like it has happened before, but it hasn’t.  It can be a strange and often confusing experience to feel like the exact same thing has happened to you twice, even though it hasn’t.  While many people will just dismiss it and go about their business, there are those of us who are interested in exploring what this means and why it is happening.

There are many different scientific and spiritual theories as to why this phenomenon occurs. Today I will be focusing on the spiritual energy of this concept, but feel free to look up other explanations if you feel like you need more information. (Please note that experiencing déjà vu can be something as simple as standing in the middle of your living room or as complex and having the exact same conversation with someone as you remember having before. It’s important not to judge it by how much or how little of the scene seems familiar to you.

Why is this happening?

In my experience, déjà vu happens for one of two reasons.  The first one is simply the Universe or your higher-self checking in to let you know you’re on the right track. Another way of confirming you are exactly where you are supposed to be.  This is especially helpful when we are feeling lost in life or questioning if we’re doing the right things with our life. For me, if this is the message, it feels more comforting than anything else. Especially now that I know what this occurrence is attempting to tell me.

The second, more complex explanation is that you have had this exact experience before, but in another timeline. Now before I lose you on this one, let me try to explain what this means. This particular concept has to do with quantum physics. There is an idea that we exist as ourselves across many different parallel dimensions. And we have a different life and purpose in each of them. (Think the Flash tv show and the Multiverse concept.) In one timeline you may be a lawyer, while in another you are homeless. You are also a nurse, musician, artist, orphan, prominent leader, accountant, shoe salesman, etc.…the list goes on forever! You are everyone, everywhere, just in a different timeline. And because you are not focusing your attention on your other selves, you are not consciously aware of them. That’s how this idea works.

Now that we’ve got the basics of this concept down, let’s talk about how it relates to déjà vu specifically. Say the current “you” and another version of “you” in an alternate timeline are in the same place, at the same time, standing in the same spot as the same events happen simultaneously around you. This event can a will produce an occurrence of déjà vu. But since neither of you are aware of the other version of yourself, you will not know that this is what is happening. This can also be true if the other version of yourself has the same experience, but at a different point in their timeline.

What does it mean?

There are times when you experience déjà vu that it won’t mean anything profound. Even if you are experiencing strong emotions. I recall a time where I was really missing a particular person who had only been around for a very short period of time romantically. It happened well over a year after his departure. I felt such a feeling of profound loss, much like a divorce or a death. The reality of the situation was that we weren’t really that close because things didn’t last long. And honestly I didn’t miss him that much when he left. When I analyzed it further I came to the conclusion that I had lost him harshly in another timeline, at this exact point in my current one. And this is why I was experiencing these intense emotions that seemed unreasonable and unfounded to me considering the experience that I remembered.

While this is just one example of what an alternate timeline déjà vu can create, there are other things that it can be trying to tell you as well. Sometimes it’s a case of simply altering your own timeline in some way. It could be that you have some previous experience with whatever is happening at the moment.  Maybe it’s an opportunity to heal an issue that you have from another timeline. Or it could relate to a habit or pattern another version of you out there has.

If you’re interested in learning more about what your personal experience with déjà vu is trying to tell you, I would suggest meditating or doing some work connecting to your higher self or spirit guides to get some answers. If you are having a difficult time figuring it out on your own, feel free to ask a magickal or intuitive friend for their perspective. Sometimes it’s easier for other people to see things accurately because they are not looking at it from the same viewpoint.
