Divination by Stone
Runes are small stones with symbols that are used for divining information. Unlike the tarot or other tools that will give more detailed information, runes rely on hints or loose guidance for interpretation. Leaving the detail work to you! The concept behind this is the belief that the future is not fixed. And you have the power to change what you want if you don’t like what you are being shown. Using runes will alert you to problem areas and allow you to see how those things affect your current situation.
The name “rune” translates to the word mystery, and can also mean secret or whisper. Runes can differ depending on what type of alphabet is used. However the oldest ones come from a Germanic origin. Each one is marked with a letter of this alphabet, and coincides with a symbolic meaning. Traditionally runes are made from stones, but can come in other forms such as wood or clay. Especially if you decide to handcraft them yourself! As with any other tool, you should always choose the set of runes that energetically feels the best to you.
How Rune Casting Works
The process of divination with runes is called casting. And this can be done a variety of different ways. Most people view casting as throwing the runes and reading the ones that land right side up. You can also choose 9 out of your bag and throw them onto a cloth. The stones that are near the middle symbolize energy that is closer or that will affect things more directly.
Like with most things in life, there is more than one way to read runes. The simplest and easiest way is to focus your mind on a question and choose one (without looking) from your rune bag. This will be the energy or intention that is affecting the question you asked about. Don’t be afraid to pull one or two more clarifying runes if you need to! Other methods include laying them out in a pre-designated spread to read.
If you’re interested in this form of divination, I highly recommend purchasing a book to guide you through layouts and give you more detailed information about each rune. For people who are not well versed with this tool, or are uncomfortable relying on their psychic or intuitive abilities, you may appreciate the knowledge a book has to offer.
