Seashell Magick – 3 Easy Rituals

Seashell Magick

Welcome to the power of the sea…

Seashell Magick is a must have for anyone who loves the ocean. Here’s what you need to know about how it works! Each shell was created by an individual animal at one time for a home.  Like other beings, each creature has its own set of intuition and consciousness that is infused in the shell in which it lived.  And even after it’s gone, that energy and information still remains. So when you do readings or practice divination with seashells, they are imparting with you’re the wisdom of their previous homeowners as well as their experience in the ocean. Because of these unique qualities, seashells are a perfect magick conduit.  If you’re interested in learning seashell divination techniques, I have another article that deals with this method on its own as it is a bit more intricate.

On Your Alter:

The easiest way to incorporate ocean magick is to use a single shell to hold water or sand on your alter. If you want to take it a step further you can use a different seashell to denote each one of  the four directions.

East represents the element of air as well as the dawn. Shells the color of the sunrise or the sun’s rays would be appropriate for this direction.

South claims the time of midday and the element of fire. White shells the color of the afternoon sun can be used here.

West holds the element of water and also the dusk part of our day.  Any shells that are the color of the setting sun can be used for this direction. Or turn one over so it holds water to directly represent the element.

North is the nighttime and the element of earth. Dark colored shells as well as starfish and silver dollars are perfect for this direction as they symbolize the time of day and are also grounded by sitting on the sand of the ocean’s floor.

In a Bath

There’s nothing a mermaid likes more than a bath! If you want to connect with the energy of the ocean you can add seashells into your bath and benefit from the energy and spiritual release they provide. You don’t have to do anything fancy, but if you’re up for it you can try the mermaid bath below to get your full tail on. (More Mermaid Baths available here.)

Mermaid bath:
  •    ¼ – ½ cup of Sea Salt
  •    3-6 Seashells
  •    A splash of seaweed (nori or anything else you prefer)
  •    1 teaspoon of glitter (blue, gold or green)

If you want to get a little deeper with it, you can meditate in the bath and see what wisdom the shells have to offer you. You can pick one or two to work with. Or use seven shells you really like and place them on your different energy centers to get information on what is going on with each one. Remember that each shell has its own specific set of knowledge. So, picking ones you are drawn to is going to assist you in divining spiritual information.

As Jewelry

Shells are representative of water. And water is an element that absorbs or takes in everything around it in a neutralizing way. This is why many people will take regular cleansing or ritual baths. Submerging themselves allows the water to absorb and remove any negative or unwanted energy from their person.

Wearing jewelry made of shells can have a similar effect. Even though they are not water, they are from the water, and this is what allows them to absorb energy. If you are feeling particularly emotional or like something heavy is sticking to you, get some shells on you. (Coral will work too!) There are many different forms of jewelry to choose from that span from stylist to a more casual feel.  If you prefer you can also take a shell you have personally collected, and turn it into something you can wear with little more than a sturdy string. It doesn’t matter what it looks like, just that you wear it.

“The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever”

~ Jacques Cousteau
